Simple Movie Date Nights & Homemade Popcorn Seasonings

My husband is a hard-working teacher and I’m a stay-at-home mom. We have an active 21 month old and another baby on the way. For those simple reasons (and countless more), going out on a date doesn’t happen very often. We’d love to go out but schedules and money don’t make it a realistic option.

For that reason, we have learned to enjoy simple movie date nights at home. We’ve worked our way through series on Netflix or watched movies off our shelf. We borrow movies from the library or rent them from Redbox. Since we don’t make it out to the movies very often at all, we simply wait for them to come out on DVD.

I was excited to see that War Room (by the creators of Fireproof and Courageous) was finally coming out on DVD this week. War Room is the story of a young wife in a troubled marriage. Upon the advice of an elderly woman, she decides to develop a prayer strategy for her husband, her marriage and her family. My favorite quote from the movie was spoken by Miss Clara. She said, “To win the fight, you’ve got to have the right strategy and the right resources because victories don’t come by accident.

It is rare to see quality, Christian movies produced in this day and age! This movie reminded me to continue praying for my husband and our marriage – each and every day of our lives. To me, War Room was the perfect date night movie. You’re enjoying time with your spouse, while watching a movie that will remind you of the importance of your marriage! If you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend you watch it soon.

Since War Room is just being released, Walmart is running a special promotion for $10 digital movie code (a VUDU offer) if you decide to purchase this new DVD (or any new Sony release). To take advantage of it, simply do the following things.

  • Buy all 4 participating products (listed on the website below) in one transaction at Walmart between 12/22/15 and 2/2/16
  • Snap a picture of your receipt and visit uploadreceipt.com/movienight to submit your receipt by 2/9/16.
  • Get a $10 Vudu movie code by email.
  • This offer is limit 1 per person and while supplies last.

While we were out and about running errands, I decided to pick up some treats at Walmart to make our simple movie night even more special. What movie night is complete without popcorn?

I bought Orville Redenbacher (6 pack) Movie Theater Popcorn as well as some Coca-Cola 6-packs. I purchased Coca-Cola classic for my husband, as well as Diet Coke for myself. I purchased Sprite for us both to share. Since we don’t drink soda very often, I like having the smaller (1/2 liter) bottles on hand so we don’t have to finish all of it in one sitting. Finally, I also picked up some new canisters of Mars Milk Chocolate and Peanut M&M’S® Chocolate Candies for a chocolate treat. You can never go wrong with chocolate, in my humble opinion! I found these M&M’S® canisters in the check-out aisle if you are looking for them. The popcorn and Coca-Cola were located in the regular aisles.

Make It a Movie Night Products

Since War Room is just being released on DVD, you may find a display at your local Walmart promoting all these products, as part of a $10 VUDU offer. Mine did not have a display up but it was featuring War Room by all their movies!

Even though those treats were lovely, I went one step farther and quickly made some homemade popcorn seasonings for our popcorn. I’ve been craving popcorn and seasonings lately!

I decided to make a savory seasoning (parmesan garlic) as well as a sweet (Mexican chocolate). Both require just a few simple ingredients from your pantry and come together quickly. These seasonings really do make a delicious Orville Redenbacher popcorn even better! And it is so easy, too. Just pop your microwave popcorn and sprinkle with your homemade seasonings.

To make the Parmesan garlic seasoning, you need to remember a 4 to 1 ratio. Add 4 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese for every 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder.

You can adjust these proportions to your personal taste. If you like a stronger garlic taste, use less Parmesan cheese. If you want a milder garlic flavor, add more Parmesan cheese. If you are feeling fancy, sprinkle some parsley into the mix! Once your flavor is right, sprinkle on top of your popcorn.

Directions: Mix together well. Sprinkle over popped Orville Redenbacher popcorn. Store leftover seasoning in a sealed container.

If you are looking for something sweeter, try mixing up a simple chocolate seasoning. Again, you have to remember a 4 to 1 to 1 ratio. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can sprinkle chocolate seasoning on your popcorn and stir in M&M’S® Chocolate Candies for extra chocolate flavor.

  1. We love a good movie date night at our house! We are working through the AFI Top 100 Films of all time, so that gives us a nice list of quality movies to watch. Sometimes we’ll splurge and get take out Chinese or a bottle of wine to go with the movie. Since we get the movies from our library, it is a very frugal (but fun!) date night!

    1. Agreed! When you get a free movie, it’s fun to splurge on occasion! That’s a great idea to work your way through a specific movie list. I think movie date nights (at home) are the staples of all frugal parents with young children! 🙂 Still, it’s nice to hear we’re not alone in that regard.

  2. We have four kids ages newborn to 11 years old. We don’t get to get out for date night very often either. We love doing date night movie parties at home. I love your homemade popcorn seasonings! #client

    1. At home date movies seem to be the standard for all young parents. Ha. I think we should embrace them, because whatever time we can share with our spouses is good! And thanks, Amber! I was amazed at how simple and delicious the homemade seasonings were as well.

    1. Oh, that would be a nice twist! I actually debated that, but decided to stick with just the tang of cinnamon. It’s really how amazingly simple homemade popcorn seasonings are. I hope you enjoy it, Cheyanne!
