Is Kroger Cheaper than Walmart?

Are you trying to figure out is Kroger cheaper than Walmart? Let’s look at prices to see which store will save you the most on groceries.

I recently did a full-on grocery price comparison between Kroger and Walmart—and the results might surprise you!

I walked through both stores and compared the prices on 30+ everyday grocery items. I’m talking apples to apples (literally). In this post, I’ll break down who has the cheaper prices per ounce, where Kroger’s sales shine, and when Walmart’s everyday low price still wins.

Let’s get into it!

These prices are from Northern Indiana in Spring 2025. Prices definitely vary around the country, but principles hold the same (as I will talk about below).

So… Is Kroger Cheaper or Is Walmart?

Walmart definitely wins on everyday low prices across most basic grocery items.

BUT…

Kroger wins on sales. If you’re willing to watch your weekly ad and shop around, you can score better prices on staples like cheese, butter, apple juice, and meat.

In fact, Kroger is one of my favorite stores for stockpiling—especially when they run big promotions or digital coupons.

Tips to Save the Most at Either Store

1. Use price per ounce as your best comparison tool.

2. Check sales at Kroger every single week. They change fast and you don’t want to miss the deals, especially on meat and dairy!

3. Buy in bulk or stockpile when prices drop – especially at Kroger.

4. Don’t ignore Walmart’s prices if you need something right now and can’t wait on sales.

Final Thoughts

Were you surprised by the results? Would you agree with my analysis?

Most people assume Walmart is always cheaper—and most of the time, it is. But if you learn how to shop the sales at Kroger, you can come out ahead, even beating Walmart’s prices.
