What to Buy in March

Are you ready to save more money this month? Knowing what’s on sale in March can help you stretch your grocery budget, stock your pantry, and plan ahead for the months to come.

I’m a naturally frugal grocery shopper raising a family of six on a $525 monthly grocery budget so I am always looking for the best sales to help stretch every dollar.

One of the biggest ways I save money? Shopping by the sales cycles — and that includes knowing which items are discounted each month. March is full of smart savings opportunities, so let’s break down what to stock up on this month!

National Frozen Food Month

March is National Frozen Food Month, which means you’ll find amazing deals on everything frozen. This is a great time to fill your freezer with:

  • Frozen vegetables
  • Frozen fruits
  • Frozen juice concentrates
  • Frozen convenience meals
  • Frozen meats (like packaged chicken)
  • Frozen waffles, pizzas, snacks, and appetizers
  • And yes, even ice cream!

If you’ve got the freezer space, now’s the time to load up. Stocking your freezer with sale items saves you both money and time on busy nights.

National Cereal Day – March 7

Watch for great deals on breakfast staples like:

  • Cold cereal
  • Oatmeal and hot cereals
  • Granola and other morning items

These sales don’t just happen on one day — they often pop up throughout the week leading up to March 7th. I always try to grab our favorite cereals when they’re at their lowest price.

National Pi Day – March 14 (3.14)

This fun holiday brings with it deals on:

  • Pizzas (get it — pizza pie?)
  • Sweet pies (both fresh and frozen)

Grab a few and pop them in the freezer — they’re perfect for a last-minute dinner or dessert!

St. Patrick’s Day Sales

St. Patrick’s Day means classic ingredients go on sale:

  • Cabbage
  • Corned beef
  • Potatoes

Both are great to stock up on. Corned beef freezes well and cabbage lasts a long time in the fridge, especially when stored properly.

Lent Season: Seafood Sales

Whether your family observes Lent or not, take advantage of the fish and seafood sales this time of year. You might see markdowns on:

  • Fresh and frozen fish
  • Shrimp and shellfish
  • Fish sticks or other seafood-based meals

Another great excuse to fill your freezer!

Easter Sales

Easter varies from year to year, but March is typically when we see Easter sales – whether it is late or early in the month. Even if Easter is in April, we will often see early Easter sales still in March. One of my absolute favorite Easter sales is on butter — and yes, butter freezes beautifully! Watch for other Easter sales on:

  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Ham
  • Sugar
  • Spices
  • Chocolate chips
  • Coconut
  • Marshmallows
  • Brownie and cake mixes

Stock up now for baking, brunches, and to last you through the coming months.

Seasonal Produce in March

Seasonal produce is fresher, tastes better, and is usually cheaper. Here’s what to watch for in March:

Vegetables:

  • Artichokes
  • Asparagus
  • Avocados
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery
  • Collard greens
  • Kale
  • Leeks
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Peas
  • Radishes
  • Spinach

Fruits:

  • Kiwis
  • Lemons & limes
  • Oranges
  • Rhubarb
  • Strawberries
  • Tangerines

The fruit list may feel shorter, but don’t worry — those juicy spring and summer fruits are just around the corner!

Spring Cleaning Sales

March also kicks off spring cleaning season, so stock up on:

  • All-purpose cleaners and sprays
  • Paper towels
  • Garbage bags
  • Cleaning cloths or tools

These items go on sale as people start to deep clean their homes — and I always love to have extra on hand.

Other March Sales

Besides groceries and cleaning items, here are a few more seasonal deals:

  • Luggage – As people plan spring break and summer vacations
  • Craft Supplies – It’s National Craft Month!
  • Winter Clearance – Think snow boots, jackets, sleds, and gear (if still available).
  • Garden Supplies – Seeds, tools, and starter kits often go on sale late March.
