50 Thoughtful Gifts Under $10 That Don’t Feel Cheap

There are so many people we want to remember at Christmas. Teachers, friends, neighbors and coworkers—not to mention coaches, bus drivers, Sunday school teachers and all the other people who help our families throughout the year!

As a mom of four kids, I understand how quickly all those little gifts add up. Even spending $10 or $15 per person can stretch your Christmas budget when you have a long list of people you would like to acknowledge.

Thankfully, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to give someone a thoughtful gift. The key is choosing something that fits the person—something useful, enjoyable or personal. A small gift paired with a handwritten note can mean much more than an expensive gift bought simply because you felt like you had to give something.

All the gift ideas on this list cost $10 or less. Many of them work for Christmas, but they could also be used for teacher appreciation, hostess gifts, thank-you gifts or simply to let someone know you appreciate them.

If you are working with an even tighter budget, be sure to look at my list of thoughtful and frugal gifts under $5, too.

How Do You Make an Inexpensive Gift Feel Thoughtful?

A thoughtful gift starts with the person—not the price tag.

Think about what your recipient enjoys. Does your child’s teacher always have a cup of tea on her desk? Does your neighbor love to bake? Is there a favorite snack your coworker brings to lunch?

Those small details can turn an inexpensive gift into something that feels personal.

You can also make a simple gift feel more special by pairing two small items together. A box of tea is nice, but a box of tea with a small jar of honey feels like a complete gift. A new spatula is practical, but tying it to a handwritten copy of your favorite cookie recipe makes it more meaningful.

Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of a handwritten note. Taking a few minutes to explain why you appreciate someone may end up being the most memorable part of the gift.

Practical Gifts Under $10

1. A Notepad or Small Journal

A pretty notepad, magnetic grocery list or small journal is useful for teachers, coworkers and busy moms. Choose a design that fits the recipient instead of automatically reaching for something Christmas-themed.

2. A Reusable Grocery Bag

Reusable bags come in handy for groceries, library books, school supplies and all the extra things we moms seem to carry. Look for one that folds into a small pouch or has a design that fits the recipient.

3. A Book Light

A clip-on book light is a practical gift for a reader or someone who travels. It would also work well for a teacher who enjoys reading outside the classroom. This is the book light I have given all of our children and we all love them! It recharges so no batteries are required! Plus, it regularly goes on sale under $10 at Amazon.

4. A Compact Umbrella

Watch end-of-season clearance sales for a compact umbrella that fits inside a purse, backpack or car. It’s a practical gift and something almost everyone will eventually use.

5. A Set of Notecards

A small set of blank or thank-you cards makes a useful gift for a teacher, church worker or coworker. Everyone needs a card eventually, and having a few ready to use saves a trip to the store.

6. Something for Their Favorite Hobby

Think about what the person enjoys doing and choose one small supply connected to that hobby. You could give seeds to a gardener, yarn to someone who crochets, scrapbook stickers to a crafter or a package of pretty pens to someone who journals. The item doesn’t have to be expensive to show that you pay attention to what they enjoy.

7. Gourmet Coffee or Tea

Choose coffee or tea based on what you know the person drinks. For coffee drinkers, make sure you know whether they use ground coffee, whole beans or K-cups. For tea drinkers, choose a seasonal flavor or small sampler. This chai latte concentrate tastes amazing and would be a fun winter gift for a tea lover.

8. A Gourmet Chocolate Bar

Choose a flavor your recipient wouldn’t normally buy for themselves. Aldi and many grocery stores carry specialty chocolate bars that look and taste much more expensive than they are.

9. A Bag of Good Chocolate Chips

For a friend who loves to bake, give a bag of quality chocolate chips they might not normally buy for themselves. Ghirardelli chocolate chips would be a generous gift, especially around Christmas when bakers are going through plenty of chocolate! And let’s be honest. With the price of chocolate chips going up? Bakers are happy with any brand of chocolate chips!

10. A Jar of Local Honey

Local honey is useful, consumable and a little more special than something from the regular holiday aisle. It would make a lovely gift for a neighbor, hostess or tea drinker.

11. A Favorite Snack

Pay attention to what people enjoy. A favorite candy, bag of nuts, gourmet popcorn or special chips is a simple way to show that you notice the little things they like.

12. A Local Specialty Food

Look for jam, salsa, barbecue sauce, seasoning or another specialty item made in your area. A local food gift feels personal without requiring a large budget.

13. A Seasoning or Spice Blend

Choose a good-quality seasoning for someone who enjoys grilling or cooking. This is the kind of practical gift that can be enjoyed long after Christmas.

14. Summer Sausage or Specialty Cheese

A small summer sausage or package of specialty cheese makes an easy consumable gift for someone who prefers savory food to Christmas candy. Watch for sales at your grocery store and pair with crackers as well, if you want.

15. A Treat From a Local Bakery

Pick up a special cookie, pastry, mini loaf or other treat from a favorite local bakery. This is a simple way to support a local business while giving something that feels more special than ordinary grocery-store candy.

16. Gourmet Popcorn

A bag of flavored popcorn is an easy gift for a coworker, teacher, neighbor or Secret Santa exchange. Choose a sweet or savory flavor based on what the recipient likes.

17. Jam or Preserves

A jar of specialty jam is useful and easy to pair with bread, crackers or tea. Homemade jam is a special treat if you already do your own canning. Otherwise, buy a fancy jar of Bonne Maman jam. Both would be enjoyed!

18. A Bottle of Wine

Aldi and Trader Joe’s both carry bottles of wine for under $10. Choose this only when you know the recipient drinks wine, but it can make an easy gift for a neighbor, coworker or hostess. Buy a couple of bottles and keep them on hand for when you need a quick last-minute gift.

Choose a book that fits the recipient’s interests and tuck a magnetic bookmark inside. Bookstore sales and used bookstores can help you keep the combination under $10.

29. A Small Plant or Poinsettia

A small succulent, herb plant or Christmas cactus can brighten a desk or kitchen. At Christmas, a small poinsettia is another pretty and inexpensive option. Give a plant only when you know the recipient will enjoy it and won’t view it as one more thing to take care of.

30. Paper Plates and Napkins

What busy mom wouldn’t love the gift of a night with no dishes? Choose a package of pretty paper plates and matching napkins, then add a note encouraging her to use them on a busy evening and give herself a break from the dishes.

31. A Mini Serving Spatula

Mini serving spatulas are perfect for brownies, bars, cakes and casseroles. I have several of these mini metal ones in my own kitchen and use them all the time. They are inexpensive, practical and something many people don’t realize they need until they own one.

32. Dish Soap and a Nice Scrubber

Choose a good dish soap and pair it with a reusable scrubber or dish brush. It’s definitely practical, but choosing a pretty bottle or favorite scent makes it feel more like a gift. Plus, it’s one less thing your recipient has to buy for the kitchen this month!

33. A Homemade Freezer Meal

Next time you are making your family’s favorite dinner, double the batch and make an extra pan to share with a friend or neighbor. Who wouldn’t like having dinner cooked for them? I promise you it will be appreciated, especially during the busy holiday season.

Write one of your favorite recipes on a pretty recipe card. Pair it with a main ingredient or kitchen utensil if you want to turn it into a larger gift.

Where Can You Find Thoughtful Gifts Under $10?

You don’t have to shop at expensive specialty stores to find nice gifts. Some of my favorite places to look are grocery stores, Aldi, Walmart, Target, Marshalls, TJ Maxx and yes, Amazon.

Watch seasonal sales and clearance sections throughout the year. When you find a good deal on an item that would make a nice gift, consider buying a couple and setting them aside. This saves money and gives you a small supply of gifts for thank-you gifts and other occasions.

Multipacks can also stretch your gift budget, but make sure each individual item still feels like a complete gift. A reusable shopping bag, set of notecards or small item connected to someone’s hobby can stand alone. A single tiny item pulled from a large set may need to be paired with something else.

Amazon can be helpful for multipacks, books and practical gifts, but always check the cost per item. A bulk package is only a bargain when you can realistically use or give everything inside it.

You Can Give Thoughtful Gifts on a Budget

Giving an inexpensive gift doesn’t make you cheap. You don’t have to spend more than you can afford to show someone you appreciate them.

Choose something that fits the person. Add a handwritten note. If you enjoy baking, share something from your kitchen. A simple gift given with genuine thought will always mean more than buying something expensive simply to cross another name off your Christmas list.

I hope these thoughtful gifts under $10 help you remember the teachers, neighbors, coworkers, friends and other important people in your life while still staying within your Christmas budget.
