Free Fruit and Vegetable Shadow Matching Printable
Looking for a simple matching activity for your preschooler? This free fruit and vegetable shadow matching printable lets children match familiar foods to their shadow shapes. Use it for preschool centers, a food theme, or your homeschool preschool.
When I taught preschool, I loved finding activities that children could use in several different ways. A set of picture cards might start as a matching game and become a sorting activity the next week. Simple activities like these were some of my favorites because they were easy to prepare and use again.
I created this fruit and vegetable matching game with that in mind. Children can match pictures to shadows, practice naming foods, sort the cards, or play a memory game. Now, I am sharing it as a free printable for other teachers and moms to enjoy!

What is Included in this Free Shadow Matching Printable?
This 24-page printable includes 24 matching pairs featuring 12 fruits and 12 vegetables, with both color and black and white options.
You will find familiar foods like apples, bananas, strawberries, carrots, broccoli, and potatoes. Each food picture has a matching black silhouette for children to find.
The set includes:
- Fruit picture cards and their matching shadows.
- Vegetable picture cards and their matching shadows.
- Color and black and white versions.
- Picture cards with food names to use for naming and sorting activities.
The cards are arranged six to a page for easy printing. You do not need to print all 24 pages! Choose the version and pictures you want to use, and save the other pages for another day.
If you do not have access to a color printer, use the black and white pages. Your children can color the food pictures before you prepare the game, too.

How to Prepare your Fruit and Vegetable Shadow Matching Game
This preschool matching game only takes a few steps to get ready.
- Choose the pages you want to use.
- Print on regular paper or cardstock.
- Cut apart the individual cards along the lines, separating each food picture from its shadow.
- Laminate the cards for durability, if desired.
- Trim around the laminated cards, leaving a small sealed border.
Be sure to cut apart the cards before laminating. This allows you to seal each piece individually so the cards hold up better with repeated use. I have a personal laminator (this brand) and it is worth every penny.
For classroom centers, I recommend cardstock and lamination. If you are using the activity at home, regular paper works too! You can keep the matching cards together in a small bag or container between uses.

How to Use this Shadow Matching Activity for Preschool
To play, place a few shadow cards on the table. Give your child the corresponding fruit and vegetable pictures and have them find each match.
Children will need to look closely at the outlines. Does the picture have a long, curved shape like a banana? Can they find the leaves on top of the strawberry? Which shadow has the same shape as the carrot?
Shadow matching gives children practice noticing details and comparing shapes. Since the shadows do not show the colors of the foods, children have to look at the outline to find the correct match.
Start with just a few pairs. Four to six matches are plenty for a child who is learning how to play. Add more cards as your child becomes comfortable with the activity.
You can begin with only fruit shadow matching or only vegetable shadow matching. Mix the two sets together when your children are ready for more choices.
As they make each match, talk about the food. What is it called? Have they tasted it? Which one is their favorite? It is an easy way to work on vocabulary while you play.
More Ways to Use the Fruit and Vegetable Matching Cards
One of the things I like about this printable is that you can use the same cards for several preschool activities.
Practice naming foods. Use the picture cards with names as simple flash cards. Let children name the foods they recognize, and introduce any that are new to them.
Sort the pictures. Make groups by color, sort familiar foods from foods your child has not tried, or talk about which foods you usually serve together. You can also use the fruit and vegetable groups shown in the printable for a simple sorting activity.
Play a picture matching game. Print two copies of your chosen picture cards and have children match identical foods. This is a good starting point before introducing the shadows.
Try a memory game. Place a few pairs of identical picture cards face down. Take turns turning over two cards to look for a match. Start with a small set so children can learn the game without having too many cards to remember.
These activities would fit well into a preschool food theme, a garden unit, or a farmers market dramatic play center. They are also easy to pull out for a few minutes of learning at home.
