Free Printable Summer Number Clip Cards
Looking for simple summer activities for your preschooler? These free printable summer number clip cards are an easy way to practice counting and number recognition with a few clothespins and some fun summer pictures.
When I taught preschool, I loved having simple, themed activities ready for my centers. Changing the pictures gave the children something new to explore while we continued practicing the same important skills.
These summer counting clip cards are just that kind of activity! You can use them in a preschool classroom, for homeschool preschool, or at the kitchen table when you want a little learning time at home.

What Are Number Clip Cards?
Number clip cards are a hands-on counting activity for young children. Each card has a group of pictures to count and three numbers to choose from.
Your child counts the pictures, finds the matching number, and clips a clothespin onto that number. Simple!
While children practice counting and recognizing numbers, they also work on fine motor skills as they squeeze and release the clothespin. That is one of my favorite things about clip cards. One simple activity gives children several ways to learn!
What Is Included in These Summer Clip Cards?
This free printable includes 20 summer counting cards for the numbers 1 to 10. Each number appears twice with different summer pictures.
Children will count pictures of sunshine, flip-flops, beach balls, seashells, ice cream cones, popsicles, and more.
The PDF download includes:
- 20 number clip cards in color.
- The same 20 cards in black and white.
- Two cards for each number from 1 to 10.
- 10 PDF pages in the complete download.
Both versions are included in the download so you can print whichever works best for you. If you do not have access to a color printer, the black and white cards work just as well! You can also let your children color the pictures.

How to Prepare Your Summer Number Clip Cards
You only need a few supplies to get this activity ready:
- The free summer clip card printable.
- Regular paper or cardstock.
- Scissors.
- Clothespins.
- A laminator, if desired.
To prepare your cards:
- Print the pages you want to use. Choose the color or black and white version. Regular paper works, but cardstock makes sturdier cards.
- Cut the cards apart. Follow the lines around each individual card.
- Laminate for durability, if desired. Cut the cards apart before laminating, then trim them again, leaving a small sealed border around each card.
- Gather some clothespins. Put the cards and clothespins in a basket or bag so they are ready to use.
Laminating is optional, but it is helpful if you plan to use the cards with several children or keep them for another summer. I absolutely love my personal laminator and used it for all my clip cards – the ones I used at school and with my kids at home.
When it comes to clothespins, you can use regular size clothespins or look for mini size clothespins like these. I have bought mini sets of clothespins at Walmart and Hobby Lobby for my clip cards. Whatever size you choose, make sure they are easy to pinch and open for little fingers.

How to Use These Summer Counting Clip Cards
Have your child choose a card and count the summer pictures. Encourage them to point to each picture as they count so they do not accidentally skip one or count it twice.
Next, look at the three numbers along the bottom of the card. Ask your child to find the number that tells how many pictures they counted.
Then, clip a clothespin onto the correct number!
If your preschooler is just beginning to count, start with a few cards featuring smaller numbers. You do not need to put out all 20 cards at once. Add more as your child is ready.
You can also count together and help with the clothespin at first. For some little hands, opening the clothespin takes practice too!
These cards would work well for:
- A summer preschool math center.
- A homeschool preschool activity.
- Counting practice for Kindergarten.
- A quiet activity during an older sibling’s lesson.
- A simple indoor activity on a hot or rainy summer day.
