How do you start a Christmas savings challenge?
Start by deciding what you want your Christmas savings to cover.
Are you saving for gifts for your kids? All the gifts on your list? Christmas meals, travel or a little of everything?
You don’t need to have every purchase planned, but having a dollar amount in mind gives you something to work toward.
Then, choose a tracker that matches your goal and the amount you can realistically set aside.
Each time you save the amount shown, color in that picture. Keep your Christmas money in a separate savings account or a designated cash envelope so you know what is available when you start shopping.
You can work through the pictures in order or choose an amount that fits your budget that week. If you have $5 to save, color a $5 stocking. When you have a little more room in the budget, tackle one of the $20 amounts.
Unless you are following one of the 30-day challenges, there is no set schedule. You can save weekly, on payday or whenever you have a little extra to put toward Christmas.

Can you use these trackers for a smaller Christmas budget?
Absolutely! That is why I included the blank Christmas savings trackers.
A printed savings goal is only helpful if it works for your budget. Choose an amount you can manage.
With the blank Christmas tree tracker, you could make each of the 25 trees worth:
- $2 to save $50.
- $5 to save $125.
- $10 to save $250.
You can also write different amounts inside the pictures. Some could be worth $1 or $5, while others could be worth $10 or $20.
The blank stocking tracker gives you 30 spaces to customize, and the blank ornament tracker gives you 12 spaces for a monthly savings plan.
You can even use one of the blank challenges to help your kids start saving for Christmas as well.
Try a 30-day Christmas savings challenge
If Christmas is getting closer and you want a shorter challenge, there are two 30-day options included.
The $350 Christmas savings challenge uses a mix of $5, $10 and $20 amounts. The $600 Christmas savings challenge has you save $20 each day for 30 days.
Before you start, take a look at your budget. Saving $20 a day adds up quickly, but it also requires room in your budget to set that money aside.
If those amounts are more than you can manage right now, use the blank stocking page to create your own 30-day Christmas savings challenge.
You could save $1 a day for $30, $5 a day for $150 or choose a different amount for each stocking.
You can also take longer than 30 days to finish. The tracker is there to encourage you as you save.
Save for Christmas throughout the year
If you would rather spread out your Christmas savings, try one of the 12-month ornament trackers.
The $1,200 version has you save $100 each month. Each time you set that money aside, color in one ornament.
Want a different goal? Use the blank version to plan your own monthly amounts.
For example, if you have a year to save…
- Save $25 a month for a $300 Christmas fund.
- Save $50 a month for a $600 Christmas fund.
- Save $75 a month for a $900 Christmas fund.
- Save $200 a month for a $2,400 Christmas fund.
And if you are starting partway through the year? That is okay. Choose a smaller goal or adjust the amounts for the months you have available.

Simple ways to find money for your Christmas savings
Sometimes deciding to save is the easy part. Finding the extra money takes a little more thought!
Here are a few places to start:
- Plan a meal from your pantry or freezer. If that helps you spend less than you budgeted for groceries, move the difference to your Christmas fund.
- Sell something you no longer use. Put the money toward your savings goal.
- Set aside a little on payday. Even a small amount gives you a regular place to start.
- Save an unexpected bit of money. A rebate, cash gift or extra bit of income can help you color in another picture. I love setting aside the cash I earn from Rakuten (more info here) to go towards Christmas shopping.
You don’t have to do all of these. Pick one thing that works for you and build from there.
